WE ARE DELIGHTED TO INFORM YOU THAT Wavionix Innovative Solution International Inc. has won the "Air Traffic Management Award 1998" in the Navigation and Landing Category.

Text Box: Air Traffic Management asked its readers to decide, from eight ATC categories, which achievements in ATC safety, innovation and efficiency deserved most recognition. Nowhere was competition stronger that in the Navigation and Landing category, where the award goes jointly to Honeywell and WISI Inc. of the United States, for two developments which share a common theme.

Honeywell-Pelorus' SLS-2000 GPS-based landing system has become the only such system to receive all FAA certifications necessary to clear its use for revenue flight. This introduction of commercial satellite-based landing overruns some 40 years' of precision-approach tradition. As GPS approach become reality, it is fitting that the company shares this year's award with Swiss-US Software Company Wavionix Innovative Solutions International Inc., which is launching the first commercial GPS procedures design package. At the 1998 ICAO CNS/ATM Implementation Conference, WISI demonstrated the system's ability to cut drastically the time consumed - and the chance of making errors - when creating procedures through the use of computer-aided design. Given that the USA alone might need up to 10,000 new GPS procedures, such a tool has the potential not only to save time, but to save lives as well. With the successful introduction of these systems, precision landing can genuinely be said to have entered a new era.
